We're so happy here, that we're considering not coming back. It's our seventh time at the same hotel, at the same beach, every time it feels closer to a home. Brimming with joy. I was saying to Lucian I think it's time we finally purchase one of those phone pouches to take pics underwater, in a desperate attempt to capture Nina's happiest ever smile. We've been in the water for two days now, like true fish. And he said "no, leave it, they can't get us here". Our phones, our worries, our plans, our thoughts. They can't get us while we're out at sea like fish. They say little ones only have emotions, no thoughts, till they get old and worried about the future or regretful about the past like grown ups. We were on our honeymoon in Greece seven years ago almost to the day, when we were walking up to the Acropolis of Athens at sunset and this wonderful old little lady was crochetting water bottle holders on the side of the path. Back then I was absolutely useless with this craft, which made me even more hypnotised watching her, she was like a wizard. Last hurrah of the summer and what a glorious one it's been, so many trips to the seaside and days out in the sun. Camber Sands always reminds me of that bitter sweet song from Noir Desir called Le Vent Nous Portera, but I love playing in the dunes with Nina, the eerie breeze over them and sloping soft sand, and riding a kite till the tide chases us back, and just staring into the distance across the sea trying to pinpoint France. #cambersands #endofsummer #dayoutathebeach #leventnousportera1 month ago -
I know I say this every year, but I did have a splendid birthday. Spoilt out of this world by the sweetest man, our 3yo, and the best family, friends, and work mates I can wish for. My heart is full of love. Nina sang me happy birthday and when I told her she's a magic girl, she said to me "and so are you, mummy". Spent most of the day at This Bright Land, @somersethouse's super colourful, psychedelic (mostly free) festival. The most beautiful, vintage-looking ferris wheel that absolutely made my day, disco tunes all afternoon, @everymancinema pop-up, really good food and drinks from local indie businesses, and story-filled garden corners to explore. On for the whole of August, with live DJs in the evenings too. And a great extra was this free exhibition inside Somerset House when we went in to escape the heat: called Eternally Yours, it explores ideas around repair, care, and healing. Psychology love and appreciation post #3 of 3 (for now). I read three books recently that really shifted how I regard health and happiness, and how I deal with my strengths and weaknesses. First is brilliant @drjulie's Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? - an absolute revelation and handbook. It's a wonderful compendium of exercises and cool stuff about thought biases, gratitude, values, everyday practical tools, that best friend therapist you wish you had. Second is @dr.tracyphd's Future Tense: Why Anxiety Is Good For You (Even Though It Feels Bad) and what an epiphany this was, understating that anxiety is not a negative emotion, but a great asset, an evolutionary advantage, a survival skill that can be used to better yourself. Also super insightful facts on the history of emotional numbing. Third is @drchatterjee's Happy Mind Happy Life - liberating clarification of what happiness really means and how to nurture it. So inspiring.
